چکیده

Is there something more frozen than A foundations B ? A quick glance at the list A foundations of mathematics B : http ://www.cs.nyu.edu/mailman/listinfo/fom shows a paradigm close to archaic astronomy : truth is a primitive (like Earth), around which several systems and meta-systems gravitate (like the epicycles of Ptolemy). This being orchestrated by Doctors of the Law, in charge of the latest developments of Hilbert’s program, i.e., of a certain form of finitism obsolete since Gödel’s theorem (1931 !), but still in honour in this sort of Jurassic Park. Let us put it bluntly : these people confuse foundations with prejudices. Of course, it cannot be excluded that the deep layers behave accordingly to our preconceptions ; but who thinks in that way should draw the conclusions and quit. In this paper we propose a way in which cognitive neuroscience could provide new insights on three aspects of social cognition: intersubjectivity, the human self, and language. We provide a critical view of contemporary social cognitive neuroscience, argu...

Truth as a Normative Modality of Cognitive Acts

Attention to the conversational role of alethic terms seems to dominate, and even sometimes exhaust, many contemporary analyses of the nature of truth. Yet, because truth plays a role in judgment and assertion regardless of whether alethic terms are expressly used, such analyses cannot be comprehensive or fully adequate. A more general analysis of the nature of truth is therefore required – one...

Intersubjective Consistency of Knowledge and Belief

We consider interactive epistemic models where individuals are described by both their “knowledge” and their “beliefs”. Three intersubjective consistency conditions are examined: Intersubjective Caution (if an individual believes something to be common belief then he knows it to be common belief), Truth of Common Belief (only true facts are commonly believed) and Qualitative Agreement. These co...
